Kate Spade and other branded stuff

Published March 30, 2011 by akiko

I readily admit it. I am actually a Kate Spade bagwhore addict. In fact, I own several pieces from various collections, because I am a sucker for beautiful workmanship and I keep all the cards that come with the bags because they are so tastefully done and are replete with such creative copywriting.

But this post isn’t about good copy.

It is about a young candidate who was unveiled by the ruling party recently. And a particular rumour swirling about her penchant for designer bags, Kate Spade to be precise.

While I have no problem with the fact that she is extremely young, is married to someone very influential (which makes opening doors that tad bit easier), and might be as ‘common’ as any other 20-something you might find on the street these days; I do have a problem with how much she posted about herself on the internet and how she carelessly let the information get passed around so quickly.

Anyone worth her salt should know that it is trés unsavvy to post one’s personal pictures (detailed with captions to top it off, I heard!), when one is going to run for public office. It makes putting the puzzle pieces of one’s life that much easier, digging up the dirt and the skeletons in the closet notwithstanding. If you are going to do something that would deem that you have to be in the public eye, then make sure it is something you can live with it because it WILL always definitely come back and haunt you. It is simply bad PR if you don’t clear up all the cobwebs before inviting the scrutiny of the public eye in.

Having said all that, I know politics is a dirty game but hey, as some former colleagues said in passing, ‘she is such an easy target.’

She just should have learnt a bit more about personal branding, before she was branded as a branded bag something she probably did not want circulating around.
